Much of the Pleasant Valley High School renovation project is complete or nearly complete, so the school is planning an open house for the public from 5 to 6 p.m. on Oct. 9.

Superintendent James Konrad said that evening also is homecoming, so he invites the community to come to the game after the open house.

“Let neighbors know,” he said at the school board meeting Thursday night.

PVHS students will be giving the tours, talking about their school, and answering questions. “I think it’s best to hear it from the student’s perspective, especially those who have seen the change and the renovation over the last year and half,” Konrad said.

Parking will be available in the student parking lot and people should enter through the main entrance.

At the school board’s workshop meeting on Sept. 10, Michael Sander, a senior project manager at CHA Consulting Inc., gave a project update on the renovations and accompanied it with a Power Point presentation as a visual.

“As you can see over there on the righthand side, we’re getting a lot of green, which is areas that are done, which is a good thing in a project like this,” Sander said.

Sander recapped the interior construction activities.

“We are beginning a classroom addition out front of the school, which was the old entrance and admin. suite,” he said. “We are now starting on what was the weight room, wrestling room, bump out and addition there and connection back to the art kind of corridor where the wood shops and all of them are and then the layout for that team room out the back.”

His presentation showed the installation of the kitchen equipment and serving area has been completed, as well as the finishing touches on the flooring, ceilings and painting. The millwork for the classrooms and STEAM area also have been completed.

Crews continue to test the low voltage systems including the fire alarms, access control and data, Sander said. The installation of mechanical room equipment, ductwork and piping continues.

With the exterior, the concrete curbing, sidewalks and pavement is completed, as well as the vestibules of the new entrance, Sander said. Demolition continues on area D, which is in the front of the building where the former entrances were located.

The areas with the most work yet to be done include additions to the athletic wing and renovations, art wing renovations and J.C. Mills. The next steps include demolition of structures in the wings listed above, continued work on the exterior walls for the athletic wing addition, and getting the foundation done for the STEM classrooms.

School board director Norm Burger reported on the renovations at the voting meeting last Thursday. He said the Capital Improvement committee is looking at proposed solutions for “the greenhouse and its related leaks.” He also said the auditorium has had some light and sound issues, and the committee is discussing the defective flooring that was installed in some classrooms.

Renovation work continues in the area where the administration offices were located, Burger said. Iron work is being done and framing in new classrooms is in progress and the plans are to have it enclosed before winter.

“Any additional required abatement work will be done during scheduled holidays,” Burger said.

The high school renovation project is expected to be completed next summer.
