Police: License suspended when man caused crash
An Andreas man with a suspended driver’s license has been charged with causing a crash near Northwestern Lehigh Elementary School.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Nathan Hoenl of the Pennsylvania State Police in the case against Jason Frantz:
At 2:19 p.m. Dec. 3, police were dispatched to crash in the area of 6514, Route 309 in Lynn Township.
A silver Honda Ridgeline was facing south, partially blocking both lanes of travel. The Honda had disabling damage to the front end.
A white Jeep Grand Cherokee was off the roadway in an adjacent parking lot. The Jeep had functional damage to the rear-end and flour flat tires.
The operator of the Honda was identified as Frantz, 47.
Police determined the crash occurred as the Jeep was stopped in the lane of travel on Route 309 south due to traffic congestion.
The Honda was traveling behind the Jeep. Frantz was traveling at an unsafe speed for the current traffic conditions, and was unable to come to a complete stop.
The Honda’s front end then hit the Jeep’s rear end. That was the initial point of impact.
After impact, the Honda came to a rest partially blocking the north and south lanes of Route 309.
The Jeep traveled across the snow-covered grass into the parking lot of Northwestern Elementary School, and came to rest in the parking lot.
At the time of the crash, there were active school zone traffic controls signaling a reduction of speed to 15 mph.
Police discovered Frantz had a suspended license for insurance cancellation.
Frantz said he did not have an active auto insurance policy.
Police said Frantz had six previous convictions for driving while operating privilege were suspended.
The driver of the Jeep, a 39-year-old woman, and a juvenile passenger were transported from the scene by Cetronia Ambulance Corps to Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest, for suspected minor injuries.
Frantz faces charges of accidents involving death or injury while not licensed; careless driving; operating vehicle without financial responsibility; vehicle registration suspended; driving at safe speed; and driving while operation privilege is suspended or revoked.
He is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing Feb. 26 before District Judge Tom Creighton of Slatington.
