The Schuylkill County commissioners recognized November as Epilepsy Awareness Month.
The neurological condition is characterized by recurring seizures. More than 209,000 Pennsylvania residents live with epilepsy or a seizure disorder, according to a proclamation issued by the commissioners. It says epilepsy can be prevented and controlled by “continued community education and awareness programs.” Residents are encouraged to raise awareness and funds for the care, support and research of the condition.
The Epilepsy Foundation Eastern Pennsylvania, which serves 18 counties including Schuylkill, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton counties, said there are more than 40 types of epilepsy. More than 60 percent have no known cause, the website efepa.com shows. Each year, 150,000 people are diagnosed. In all, 3.4 million adults and children live with the condition annually.
