Weather service confirms tornado in Western Schuylkill
The National Weather Service in State College confirms an EF-0 tornado in Valley View, Schuylkill County at 12:46 p.m. Wednesday.
An EF-0 tornado is the lowest on the scale and had an estimated peak wind of 65 mph, a path length of 75 yards and a path width /maximum of 10 yards. There were no injuries or fatalities.
The National Weather Service said a very weak tornado briefly touched down near W Main Street and Broad Street in Valley View, and tracked toward the north for about 75 yards into an apple orchard. The tornado downed a few apple trees and caused minor damage to the roofs of a few homes nearby.
“We think the video kind of speaks for itself,” Mike Colbert, a meteorologist with the NWS, said Thursday of a widely circulating video on social media.
A video by Kortnee Wagner appears to show a tornado in Hegins Township. The video has 78,100 views. See the video.
When deciding if a tornado has indeed occurred, the National Weather Service looks at photo and video evidence. Drone footage posted online has also been viewed. Damage evidence left by a possible tornado versus straight line winds is also factored in.
Colbert said no one has been out to look at the area, and a visit isn’t planned.
The National Weather Service uses the Enhanced Fujita scale to classify tornadoes into the following categories:

EF1...Weak......86 to 110 mph
EF2...Strong....111 to 135 mph
