Slatington upgrades maintenance security

Slatington Borough Council has approved upgrading the security system at the maintenance building.

Borough manager Dan Stevens said the new equipment will be installed as soon as it arrives. The work will be done by Nicholson Security LLC for $2,785.89. A deposit of $1,392.94 was paid when the equipment was ordered.

Stevens also said the borough has received from the federal government the first installment from the American Rescue Plan: Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery Funds. The first installment was $225,405.15. The borough will receive the second installment of $225,405.15 in 2022.

“We got the grant, but it doesn’t mean we’re spending it right away,” Stevens said in an interview. “We have several years to spend it.”

Stevens said the council will be discussing uses for the money in their committees and will look at potential projects in which to apply the funding. The borough has up to 2026 to spend the money on expenses incurred between now and Dec. 21, 2024.

Stevens also said the borough council accepted three bids for the paving project of East Church Street. The paving will pick up from where the other paving project ended at First Street, where the prior paving project ended. It will continue down the hill.

“That road is in terrible condition,” Stevens said.

The lowest bidder was Bruce George Paving and Excavating in Kunkletown for $95,404.94. The project includes paving of the entire width of the road.

Additional business this month included:

• Approved the resignation of Officer Frank Gnas as of June 12, a part-time officer for the borough, and the hiring of Kevin Torres as a part-time police officer effective July 12.

• Approved selling the borough’s 1997 small dump truck on Municibid. An asking price was not set. When the bids come in, the council will weigh the bids and decide if they will accept one or not.

• And approved a request to use facilities by D&L for its 10th Annual D&L Heritage Half Marathon at 8 a.m. on Nov. 7.
