Marian Catholic High School is inviting alumni, parents, grandparents and friends to celebrate the legacy of the late John “Jack” Malarkey through a special monthlong giving initiative benefiting the Marian Fund.

The campaign, titled “June for Jack — The Malarkey Match Challenge: Double Your Impact. Honor A Legacy. Support Marian Students,” will run throughout the month of June. A donor has pledged to match every gift made to the Marian Fund during the month of June — up to $50,000 — in honor of Malarkey, effectively doubling the impact of every contribution as Marian works toward its $550,000 Marian Fund goal by June 30.

Malarkey passed away on June 5, 2025, leaving behind a legacy unmatched in Marian Catholic history.

Affectionately known as “Mr. Marian,” he devoted more than six decades to the school community as a teacher, coach, principal, mentor and volunteer. His influence reached generations of students and families who remember him for his faith, kindness, humility and unwavering commitment to Catholic education.

In recognition of the challenge campaign, every donor contributing $100 or more during June will receive a Marian outdoor flag, with the option of a 3-foot by 5-foot Marian flag or a Marian garden flag, while supplies last.

Donors are also encouraged to share memories by answering a simple question: “What is the most meaningful lesson Mr. Malarkey taught you, or how did he impact your life?”

Selected reflections may be shared throughout the campaign as a tribute to the enduring influence of Malarkey.

The Rev. Robert Finlan, principal of Marian and longtime friend of Malarkey, reflected on his legacy.

“Jack Malarkey represented everything Marian strives to be — faith-filled, compassionate, humble and deeply committed to serving others,” Finlan said. “He devoted his life to generations of students and families, not for recognition, but because he loved Marian and believed in its mission. This challenge is an opportunity to honor Jack’s extraordinary legacy while investing in the future of Marian students. I cannot think of a more fitting tribute.”

Jim Sauka ’66, longtime Marian supporter and friend, added: “For many of us, Jack Malarkey was more than an educator or administrator — he was a mentor, encourager and example of servant leadership. His dedication to Marian was lifelong and genuine. Supporting the Marian Fund through this challenge is a meaningful way to remember all that he gave to our school and ensure future students benefit from the same spirit of excellence and care.”

Bill O’Gurek ’73, president of the Marian Catholic Alumni Association, said: “Generations of Marian alumni have a story about Mr. Malarkey and how he impacted their lives. His influence extended far beyond the classroom or athletic field. He helped shape who we became as people. I encourage alumni everywhere to participate in the June for Jack campaign and honor a man whose life was synonymous with Marian Catholic.”

John Malarkey ’83, Jack’s son, shared his family’s gratitude for the tribute: “My father loved Marian with all his heart. It was never simply where he worked — it was his vocation, his community and his second home. He believed deeply in Catholic education and in the young people entrusted to Marian. Our family is humbled by this effort to honor him, and I know he would be incredibly grateful to see support for today’s students continue through the Marian Fund. Participating in this challenge is a beautiful way to celebrate his life and legacy.”
