Polk discusses winter stockpiles, equipment

Even though it is spring, Chairman Brian Ahner brought up at Monday night’s meeting the importance of replenishing the stockpiles for next year’s winter weather.

“We are modifying our stockpile set down. Salt was ordered, and we’d like, I think, to get four or five rows to replenish the stockpile heading into the next season,” he said.

“I did get some prices on pickup trucks, but not real happy with what we got so far,” Ahner said about replacing the minivans with pickups.

Ahner also revisited the topic of buying an excavating machine. The excavator could do jobs that the backhoe is really not suited for. Many jobs the township does would be much easier with an excavator rather than a backhoe.

“For instance, to do a pipe across the road, our backhoe was on someone else’s property. You know we don’t get easements for that. We just work with the people,” he said.

Also, the excavator could help maintain the walking trail and other maintenance jobs, Ahner said.

Until they look at prices and decide what size and manufacturer would be the best for the township’s needs, no decision will be made.
