A bomb scare at Jim Thorpe Area High School turned out to be just that, a scare.

Police were called to the building just before 12:30 p.m. after a student found a handwritten note on a toilet paper dispenser indicating there was a bomb in the auditorium.The student reported the note to Principal Thomas Lesisko and the building was evacuated.Students were taken to a safe, undisclosed location, while authorities waited for two bomb-sniffing dogs used by state police, one from the Hazleton barracks and one from Skippack."We did a sweep of the school with the dogs with negative results," Jim Thorpe Police Chief Joe Schatz said. "At that point, the students were brought back into the building after we had it clear."An investigation is ongoing to determine who left the threat."It's a little harder when it happens in a bathroom, but we'll do our best to review the security footage we do have and take it from there," Schatz said.He credited the multiple responding agencies, including fire, medical and Emergency Management Agency personnel."We have a plan when something like this is called in and today it was orchestrated beautifully," Schatz said. "I'd also like to credit the school staff for how they handled their end of it."Jim Thorpe Superintendent Brian Gasper was also satisfied with how the district carried out its procedures for such an event."Everything went very smooth," he said. "There is no concern on our end about how we dealt with it. You have to err on the side of caution."While such situations can be frustrating for all of those involved, Gasper takes an optimistic look at the outcome."Yeah, you have a loss of class time and things like that, but there could be a loss of other things as well and that's why we do what we do," he said. "We'll continue to employ our procedures and if there is disciplinary action that can come out of this, it will be swift and severe."Despite the search turning up empty, Jim Thorpe canceled its home girls basketball game against Lehighton on Monday night.Dustin McAndrew, athletic director for Jim Thorpe, announced the postponement just before 2:30 p.m.
