Parryville to host Redneck liquidation sale this Labor Day weekend

Bargain basement deals on redneck gear are bound to be had this Labor Day weekend in Parryville.

A Redneck liquidation sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Parryville Fire Company.

This year’s Weissport Redneck Festival was canceled in July amid safety concerns from borough officials.

The event is sponsored by the Weissport Recreation Committee and had been held each Labor Day weekend. Proceeds from the festival benefited the recreational needs of the community.

In the past, that has included new playground equipment, rubber mulch, a new pavilion with picnic tables, a gazebo and permanent electric service throughout the main park in the center of town.

But Weissport Mayor Paulette Watson made the decision in July to cancel what would have been the 13th annual event due to growing concerns over potential safety issues.

A monument in the Weissport park honors soldiers, including those who fought in the Civil War. Borough officials worry it could be damaged because nationwide protests have left many monuments vandalized.

That decision prompted organizers of the Redneck Festival to hold this weekend’s redneck liquidation sale in Parryville, according to Duane Dellecker, vice president of the Weissport Recreation Committee.

Dellecker said the sale will include 12 years’ worth of T-shirts at the cost of just $8, while a Chinese auction will also be held on surplus materials from the festival. Parryville Fire Company will be serving refreshments.

“Redneck flags, Confederate flags, American flags, Federal flags, all of this stuff is going to be sold, but not at the retail price we would have charged at the festival,” Dellecker said. “And a lot of our surplus materials, we’re going to be having a Redneck Chinese auction so people can put tickets in and try to win a memento from all the years they helped participate in the Redneck Festival.”

Dellecker explained where the redneck liquidation sale stemmed from.

“It came about because we had to figure out what to do with our surplus stuff,” he said. “When the (Weissport) borough decided to pull the rug out from under our festival, we decided we’re not going to do anything to help them.”

However, Dellecker noted that the sale will help raise money for Weissport recreation one last time, as he said they will be putting 10 new benches on concrete slabs in the park.
