Carbon addresses election ballot mailers

Mail-in and absentee ballot applications continue to rise in Carbon County ahead of the General Election, but many voters are also questioning why they are receiving ballot applications in the mail.

On Thursday, Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein said the county election bureau has received over 6,000 applications for mail-in and absentee ballots so far.

But, in addition to those applications, a number of phone calls are coming in questioning why ballot applications are getting mailed to them, some applications even for deceased loved ones, people who haven’t lived in the home or who aren’t registered to vote.

Lisa Dart, director of elections said Monday that the applications people are receiving in the mail are not from the Carbon County Election Bureau, but rather from various Democratic, Republican and some independent voter groups.

“Apparently, they have old lists of voters,” she said, noting that because of this, her office is inundated with calls and even have been getting yelled at because the applications state to return it to her election office.

She said her office is not sending out applications to voters.
