School board races in Carbon County
Voters on Tuesday changed the faces of some local school boards while others stayed the same.
In the Panther Valley School District, incumbent Michelle Markovich lost her bid for another term as six candidates sought five open seats. The district includes the Schuylkill County borough of Coaldale.Newcomer Wayne V. Gryzik topped out at a total of 2,114 votes; incumbent Anthony DeMarco came in second with 1,962 votes; Gary Porembo, the husband of former superintendent Rosemary Porembo, had 1,778 votes; newcomer Renee DeMelfi had 1,804 votes.Newcomer Joseph Faenza had 1,671 votes, and Markovich had a total of 969 votes. There were a total of 65 write-in votes for the seats.In the Weatherly Area School District, there were six open seats to be had.There was one contested race, for a two-year term. Incumbent Matthew D. vonFrisch won that seat with 523 votes over incumbent Gerard Grega's 518. There were six write-in votes for that seat.For the five four-year terms, vonFrisch was also the top vote-getter with 900 votes. Newcomer William Knepper had 894 votes, newcomer Corey Gerhart had 904, Grega had 793, and incumbent Georgeann Herling had 737. There were 21 write-in votes for the four-year terms.There were no races for the five open seats on the Jim Thorpe Area School Board. Clement C. McGinley was the top vote-getter with 2,166 votes. Pearl Downs-Sheckler had 1,981; Michael J. Huber came in third with 2,011 votes; Mike Principe had 1,750 votes and Robert Schaninger trailed with 1,656. There were 54 write-in votes.There were also no races for the five open seats on the Palmerton Area School Board; voters kept all five incumbents on for another four-year term.Tammy L. Recker had 1,483 votes; Josann M. Harry came in second with 1,401 votes; Joshua C. Smale had 1,113 votes; Sherry A. Cseh-Haas had 1,135, and Charles C. Gildner had 1,238 votes. There were 35 write-in votes.In the Hazleton Area School District, voters in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows gave five four-year seats to Vinnie Zola, 319 votes; Tony Bonomo, 315, Robert Fiume, 249;Jackie Scarcella, 250; and Marie Kay, 242 votes.Also running were Robert Childs with 193 votes; Thomas J. Chirico with 104; Lori Losen with 101; and Casey Herseim with 61 votes. There were two write-in votes for the seats.
