Carbon Co. shared ride fares to rise

A 90-cent rate hike on Carbon County’s shared ride service that was proposed earlier this year is set to take effect July 1.

LANTA, which manages the Carbon County Community Transit, said in a release Monday that the rate increase, which had been planned for March but was delayed due to the pandemic, has been reinstated.

Fares for the fixed-route Lynx buses that also operate in the county are not increasing.

Shared ride services costs are dependent on the trip miles, with full fare costs ranging from $27 to $56 a trip. However, riders do not pay that much. Copays for one-way rides will now range from $4.05 to $8.40 depending on the length of the trip.

LANTA said that Carbon County Area Agency on Aging sponsored rider copay tickets, which riders can purchase, are now available for $1.35, $1.55, $1.80 and $2.10 at www.carbontransit.com/fare or by calling 610-776-7433, option 4.

Ticket orders can also be taken by the drivers with check payment. Orders will then be mailed to the rider.

Old tickets may still be used, the company states, but riders will have to purchase 30-cent tickets to pay the difference.

The rate hike was announced in March at a Carbon County Commissioners meeting.

At that time, several senior citizens spoke out against the fare increase because the additional cost could mean the difference of going places or being stuck in their home without transportation.

At the time, the commissioners held roundtable discussions with Area Agency on Aging to see if there was any way of offsetting the increase for senior citizens.

When contacted Tuesday, the commissioners said that discussions between the county and LANTA are ongoing regarding transit operations.
