Work on volleyball court to begin Memorial Day weekend

Work on a proposed volleyball court in Walnutport halted by the coronavirus pandemic is expected to get underway Memorial Day weekend.

The matter was discussed at Thursday’s borough council meeting, at which time it was noted that the work was to have begun last month but couldn’t due to the COVID-19 virus.

It was stated that the work is going to start next week, at which time the volleyball court will be dug out. The work will then be done in phases, as poles will eventually be ordered, and then sand acquired.

Borough grant coordinator Michael Wentz said that Livengood Excavators is donating the machine, and one of the workers will dig out the volleyball court.

Wentz said that the borough crew, himself, and another individual will volunteer their time to work and haul everything away.

He said the work will likely begin next weekend.

In March, council set a target date of April 1 for work to get started on the proposed court.

That came after resident Donald Eckhart in February encouraged the borough to ramp up its efforts to add a volleyball court as a recreational activity.

At that time, Councilman Michael Gaston said that while he understood Eckhart’s concern, council didn’t want to do anything in the winter due to the Christmas trees that were set up in the park.

Wentz previously said the borough has a commitment from Haines & Kibblehouse Inc. to donate some sand and stone for the proposed volleyball court.

Eckhart - who serves on the borough’s recreation committee - previously made a $2,000 donation toward a volleyball court.

Borough Mayor Wayne Weidner then asked council where the rest of the money would come from to help see the project to fruition.

Gaston said the materials needed were mainly stone and sand, with sand being the most expensive item to get to the borough.

Wentz said the sand would either come from Maryland or New Jersey, as it’s beach sand.

After that meeting, he said there were grants pending for the volleyball court.
