New volunteers step up to keep NL pool open
Four new Slatington residents stepped forward Tuesday night during the Northern Lehigh Swimming Pool Association meeting to join the board, dousing suspicions that the community pool might close.
Jessica Mack, Linda Sayer, Katherine Barhight and Robert Berger joined the board. Vice President Lori Vernon moved up to the role of president, due to Tess McGowen's resignation.Dan Bixler was added to the position of treasurer. Mack will fill the role of vice president vacated by Vernon's promotion and Sayer will act as secretary. Don Lerch resigned from that position earlier this year. The newly appointed roles will hold until the association's general election in February."I decided to join the board because it would be a shame to see the pool close because no one is stepping up," Barhight said."I went there as a child and now I bring my four-year-old there."Mack said, "When I was a kid my dad managed the pool. I worked there through high school and college. Farrell kind of helped raise us. Now I take my kids there."Farrell Snyder, pool manager and board member, is set to retire from his management role."It's been a good run, I've done this many, many years and it's time to pass the torch," he told the crowd. The association is accepting resumes for the position of manager and assistant manager as well as head lifeguard until mid-December. "We have two very actively interested parties for the manager position," Vernon said. Snyder offered to mentor the new hire on the daily duties required of the manager. The board is set up to be comprised of 15 members; currently it operates with five."When you are reorganizing like this, it's a good idea to start with a full board because people will drop off," Snyder said.To qualify for the board the interested party must hold a pool pass."The pool association is owned by members, it shows active interest in the pool," Mack said."As far as serving on committee or volunteering you can, you don't have to be a pass holder. But if you're not a member then they're only suggestions," Vernon said. "If you're on the board, why wouldn't you want to be a pass holder?""You have to have a stake in what you are running," Snyder said.Board members are still currently being accepted until the February deadline. The next meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 24 in the Slatington Elementary Cafeteria located on Shadow Oaks Lane.
