Lehigh Township supervisors discussed recreation at the board’s recent meeting.

During public comment, resident Dan Ziegenfuss raised concerns about maintenance at the soccer field in Berlinsville Park, saying grass is sometimes too high for younger players.

“I get it. If the township mows on Monday or Tuesday, it’s too high by Sunday,” Ziegenfuss said.

He told supervisors that parents and residents have occasionally mowed fields themselves when needed.

Supervisor Cindy Miller asked whether volunteers were using township equipment.

“No, we take our own mowers,” Ziegenfuss replied.

Both supervisors Janet Sheats and Gerald L. Pritchard acknowledged they had also helped cut grass at township parks.

Miller expressed concern about potential liability issues, prompting Backenstoe to offer assistance in developing an agreement governing volunteer mowing activities.

“I will help Alice Rehrig draw up an agreement for residents and coaches about cutting the grass,” he said. Pritchard said the recreation committee is reviewing playground equipment options and that Rehrig is obtaining quotes. Plans also continue for the township’s annual tree-lighting event.

Budget

Previously, Rehrig gave a draft of the 2027 budget to the supervisors for review.

Items that are needed for the office include document imaging, server rack, new QuickBooks Program and a permit program.

The air conditioner for the main office is from 2008. It is working, but makes a terrible noise. Maybe think about replacing it.”

She suggested projects to think about include a new fire alarm, burglar alarm, and generator for the township offices.

For the police department a new vehicle is needed. They are looking into the Ford Explorer, which is a hybrid.

In-car cameras, body cameras, Tasers, and printers for the police cars are needed.

Rehrig said, “I am waiting on one more quote for the new radios for the cars. There will be four officer vests that are due for renewal.’

She added, “Consider a lighter weight generator for power outages that can be transported easier to the location that it is needed. I have a quote of $110,000 for playground equipment. I feel we will come in on budget.”

Other business

Zoning Officer Roxann Colfer requested Backenstoe attend zoning appeals hearings scheduled before the district judge on Sept. 30 and Oct. 8. Backenstoe agreed.

Supervisors tabled bids for the Timberline Road project after receiving only one bid.

Resolution 2026-21, which would establish procedures and time limits for public comment, was also tabled until the full board is present. Supervisors have discussed a 3-minute limit for residents to speak.

Discussion of employee appreciation was tabled as well.
