The South Schuylkill Garden Club is dedicated to promoting greater interest and knowledge in gardening, to stimulate interest in conservation through environmental education, and to promote community beautification.

Each spring, the club holds an annual plant sale with all proceeds benefiting the programs and projects of the garden club.

One project is to award $1,000 scholarships to any Schuylkill County high school senior or college student. Students should be studying specific majors, such as horticulture, floriculture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, botany, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental control, land-use planning, land management, and allied fields.

Four students received $1,000 scholarships at the July meeting of the garden club that was held at the First United Church of Christ in Schuylkill Haven.

Garden club President Kim Morgan said, “These scholarships are a good investment in young people who will do much to further our club’s mission to promote gardening and help our environment.

“This is a wise use of the money that was raised at our plant sale.”

The four students who each received a $1,000 scholarship are:

• Maya Juliette Krammes, graduated from Schuylkill Haven and enrolled at Shippensburg with a major in biology and ecology to pursue a career as a biological science technician.

• Lily Emma Krammes, graduated from Schuylkill Haven and enrolled at Shippensburg with a major in biology and ecology to pursue a career as a naturalist or field botanist.

• Emmet Padraig Portland, graduated from Nativity BVM and enrolled at Lebanon Valley College with a major in biology (Honors) to pursue a career as a research scientist with a focus on biological and environmental science.

• Kyle Robert Bowman, graduated from Tri-Valley High School and enrolled at Pennsylvania College of Technology with a major in heavy equipment operations/technology to pursue a career as a heavy equipment operator.
