2023 Election: Carbon County candidates on the ballot

Carbon County candidates listed on the ballot on Tuesday.

Carbon County offices

Commissioner: Three seats are open. Wayne Nothstein, longtime commissioner, and Michael J. Sofranko are running on the Republican ticket. Rocky Ahner, incumbent, and Jeff Schnaiter are running on the Democrat ticket.

Sheriff: Daniel G. Zeigler, current sheriff, appointed to fill the unexpired term of Tony Harvilla when he retired, running on both tickets.

Coroner: Incumbent Robert W. Miller Jr. is running on the Democrat ballot. He is being challenged by Mark W. Smith on the Republican ballot.

Controller: Sam Lux is on the Democratic ballot, while Kayla Herman is running on the Republican ticket. Controller Mark Sverchek is retiring.

Prothonotary: Incumbent Kayla Semmel is on the Republican ballot, with no one listed on the Democratic ballot.

Recorder of Deeds: Incumbent Donna Gentile is running on the Republican ticket. No one is listed on the Democratic ballot.

Magisterial District Judge

District Court 56-3-01: Includes Jim Thorpe Borough, Lehighton Borough, Weissport Borough, Mahoning Township (Voting District Packerton and Jamestown) and Penn Forest Township: Incumbent Eric M. Schrantz is cross-filed on both tickets.

District Court #56-3-02: Covers Palmerton, Parryville Borough, Bowmanstown Borough, Lower Towamensing Township, Towamensing Township, Franklin Township. Incumbent William J. Kissner is cross-filed on both ballots.

District Court 56-3-03: includes Lansford Borough, Nesquehoning Borough, Summit Hill Borough, East Penn Township, Mahoning Township (Voting Districts Mahoning and New Mahoning). Beth A. Dodson is on the Republican ballot, with Billy O’Gurek on the Democrat ticket. The seat is open with the retirement of Casimir T. Kosciolek.

School board races

Jim Thorpe School Director (4-year): Three candidates are cross-filed including Michele Mazzola, Christopher Fischi, and Pearl Downs Scheckler. Mary Figura is the lone Democrat on the ballot. Republicans include Michelle Banks and Scott Pompa. Five seats are open.

Lehighton School Director (2-year): Richard R. Beltz is unopposed on the ballot.

Lehighton School Director (4-year): Jeremy Todd Glaush, Sean D. Gleaves, Zac Hunter, Heather Neff, and April F. Walker are cross-filed on both tickets for five 4-year seats.

Palmerton School Director (4-year): Sherry A. Cseh Haas, Mary Jo King, Brandon Mazepa and Kris Schaible are listed for five 4-year seats.

Panther Valley School Director (4-Year): Michael Alabovitz, Marco R. D’Ancona, Anthony DeMarco, Pat Leonzi and Daniel V. Matika are cross-filed for five seats.

Weatherly (4-year): Five seats are open with six candidates: April Walters, William Knepper, Christy Minor, Ty Harris, Bonita Lee Barbush and Gerald Grega.

Weatherly (2-year): Barbush and Thomas J. Connors Jr.

Hazleton School Board (4-year): Residents in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows are voting for five open seats, with seven candidates: Robert Childs, Ivelisse Childs, Ellen McBride, Tony Bonomo, Carmella Yenkevich, Joseph J. Barletta and James G. Chapman.

Hazleton School Board (2-year): Carol Makuta and Bonomo are on the ballot for one seat.

Borough Council

Beaver Meadows (4-year): William M. Curilla Jr. and Barbara Brendon, both Republicans are the only two on the ballot for four open seats for 4-year positions.

Bowmanstown Council (4-Year): Three seats are open with three candidates on the ballot: Pamela J. Leiby and Norman A. Engle Jr. are on the Republican ticket. Kara Scott is running on the Democratic ballot.

East Side Council (4-year): Three 4-year seats are open. Democrat Elizabeth Berger and Republicans John G. Cepiel and Rudolph C. Schoch are on the Republican ballot.

Jim Thorpe Council (2-year): Democrat Michael J. Yeastedt and Republican Sydney R. Wernett are running for one 2-year seat.

Jim Thorpe Council (4-year seat): Three seats are open. Democrats Michael Rivkin, Robert Schaninger and Michael J. Yeastedt and Republicans Connor Rodgers and Sydney R. Wernett are running.

Lansford Council (4-year): Four seats are open. Joseph Butrie and Mary Soberick, are on the Democrat ticket. Jack Soberick and Michele R. Bartek are cross-filed. Bruce Markovich and John M. Turcmanovich, are on the Republican ballot.

Lehighton Council (4-year): Four seats are open. Grant R. Hunsicker is on the Democrat ticket. David Zimmerman, John Kreitz and Steven Hawk are cross-filed. Tina Henninger is on the Republican ballot.

Lehighton Council (2-year): Rebecca Worthy is the only candidate for one open seat.

Nesquehoning Council: Four seats are open with three people on the ballot: Bruce Nalesnik is on the Democratic ticket; Lois Corby Kuba is on the Republican ticket. Paul Kattner is cross-filed.

Summit Hill Council (2-year seat): Marlene Basiago, Sandra L. Dellicker, Alan Kruslicky are running on the Republican ticket. Lacey Gonzalez, Michael Kokinda II, Karen L. Ruzicka and David A. Wargo are competing for the spot on the Democratic ballot.

Summit Hill Council (4-year): Four seats are open. Karen L. Ruzicka is on both tickets. Lacey Gonzalez, Michael Kokinda II and David A. Wargo are on the Democratic ballot. Marlene Basiago, Alan Kruslicky and Sandra L. Dellicker, are on the Republican ticket.

Summit Hill Council (2-year): Kokinda and Basiago are running for one seat.

Palmerton Council (4-year): Terry Lee Costenbader, Raberta Hans and Andrew Hollywood, are on the Republican ballot for three 4-year seats. Holly F. Hausman Sell is on the Democratic ballot.

Palmerton Council (2-year): William Gallagher is unopposed on the Republican ballot.

Weatherly Council (4-year): Two seats are open. Joseph A. Thomas is on the Democrat ticket. Michael A. Bellizia and Joseph M. Cyburt, are on the Republican ballot.

Parryville: No candidates listed.

Weissport Council (4-year): Arland Moyer is on the Democratic ballot, with Joe Foster on the Republican ballot.

Township supervisors

Banks Township (6-year): One seat is open. Charles Schalles is on the Democratic ballot and Richard Hornick Sr. is on the Republican ticket.

East Penn Township (6-year): Two seats are open. Dennis L. Pearson is on the Democratic ballot and John L. Strockoz is on the Republican ballot.

Franklin supervisor (6-year): Leroy W. Kemmerer Jr., on the Republican ballot, is unopposed.

Kidder supervisor (6-year): Louis Pantages and Noel Torres are listed for two open spots.

Lower Towamensing supervisor (4-year): Jay Mullikin is the only candidate listed for the both the 4-year and 6-year term.

Mahoning supervisor (6-year): Myron Zeke Blahy is unopposed.

Packer supervisor (6-year): Paul W. Bray is running on the Democratic ticket and Terry L. Davis is on the Republican ticket for one 6-year seat.

Penn Forest (6-year): James Denier is unopposed.

Towamensing (6-year): Michael George is on the Democratic ticket and Guy Seifert is on the Republican side. One seat is open.
