Marine Corps group holding golf tourney

Golfers are invited to enjoy a day on the greens courtesy of a local veterans organization’s first golf tournament.

The Inaugural Golf Tournament hosted by the Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League will take place at 1 p.m. Friday at Blue Shamrock Golf Course in Palmerton.

Registration begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., and will feature a 4-person scramble format.

Tom Kobal, member of the Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League, said there will be 80 golfers who will play 18 holes. Of those, he said several are flying in from other states to participate.

Kobal said there are 38 sponsors, along with 16 tee sponsors.

“I’d like to thank every sponsor for helping the U.S. Marine Corps out,” Kobal said.

Kobal noted that the Lehighton KIA Dealership is sponsoring a 2023 KIA car hole-in-one challenge on the 10th hole.

Dom N Ali Family Restaurant, Jim Thorpe, is catering the event.

Jim Laub, commandant of the Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League, Inc. Detachment 626, explained the significance of the golf tournament.

“We just want to have a golf game, and get people involved,” Laub said. “We’re trying to get involved in more things.”

Cheryl Laub, adjutant paymaster, said she’s hopeful the event is a success.

“It’s our first one, we’re hoping it works,” Cheryl Laub said. “We’re hoping people help us out so we can raise money.”

The Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League is a veterans organization founded to continue the traditions and spirit of all Marines who proudly wear, or have worn the eagle, globe, and anchor of the Corps.

Jim Laub said that the organization also donates to Trees for Troops, and Wreaths Across America.

Laub said the organization has 52 members, but added it could always use more.

He said they meet at 7:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month at the Lehighton American Legion Post 314.
