NL students in county honors band concert

The sweet-sounding abilities of seven Northern Lehigh High School students are about to shine in the limelight.

Those select few will perform with about 100 of the best student musicians in Lehigh County at the 64th annual Lehigh County Honors Band Concert.

Presented by Northern Lehigh High School, the concert will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Northern Lehigh High School Auditorium.

The snow date is 2 p.m. Sunday.

The host director this year is David Carroll, Northern Lehigh band director, who said, “This year’s festival has been going very well, and I believe that everyone is going to enjoy the concert.”

Carroll said the students who have been chosen for the festival this year include Diego Fenstermaker, Reece Johnson, Cameron Kuntz, Lauren Nichols, Caitlin Kirk, Josh Weaber and Evan German.

He noted this will be the fifth time that Northern Lehigh has hosted the festival concert, and added it previously hosted it in 1985, 1995, 2003 and 2013. Carroll first hosted it in 2003, and this will be his third time hosting overall.

“It is a great privilege to host this honors festival,” Carroll said. “I love working with such talented music educators from all of the Lehigh county districts.

“I love interacting with all of the tremendous young people in the honors band program from all of the schools. I take very seriously the responsibility as host director to provide an educational and rewarding experience for all the students that perform on our stage at Northern Lehigh.”

Carroll said that it takes 20 hours of rehearsal by the students and band directors.

“The purpose of this festival is to promote music education in our schools, showcase the great musical talent that exist in Lehigh County, and to give our band students a unique and enriching instrumental experience which extends beyond the typical concert band settings that exist in most public schools,” he said. “I am pleased at the level of preparation all of the students have done to prepare for this year’s concert.”

The Lehigh County Honors band this year includes students from Northern Lehigh, Southern Lehigh, Whitehall, Northwestern Lehigh, Catasauqua, Salisbury, Allentown Central Catholic, Parkland, Dieruff, and William Allen High School.

The students are selected to represent their schools by the Lehigh County Band Directors Association in December.

The selections for this year’s concert are: “The Star-Spangled Banner,” “Dawn of a New Day,” “Ammerland,” “Amparito Roca,” “Toccata for Band,” “Scossa Elettrica,” “Yagi-Bushi,” “The Clapping Song,” and “The Phantom of the Opera.”
