Police release details of 4-vehicle turnpike crash

State police released details about a four-vehicle crash that happened last week along the Pennsylvania Turnpike Northeast Extension in Carbon County.

According to state police at the Pocono barracks, at 3:54 p.m. on Oct. 21 there were four vehicles involved in a crash in the northbound lane of Route 476, mile post 82.9 in Penn Forest Township.

A Toyota Tundra, driven by Erle Denworth, 74, of Mount Laurel, New Jersey, was traveling in the passing lane when he failed to control his speed to avoid a collision.

The Tundra struck the back of a Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Sydney Gnall, 22, of Barnesville.

Troopers said that the impact was at a high speed and minimal braking occurred.

The Grand Cherokee was pushed into the back end of a Honda Civic, driven by Troy Burkhart, 52, of Mohnton, which then struck a fourth vehicle that did not need to stop following the crash.

The other three vehicles sustained heavy damage.

As Denworth exited his vehicle, he fell and struck his head on the asphalt, which resulted in an injury.

Another motorists not involved in the crash stopped and tended to Denworth until emergency crews arrived.

Denworth was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest and Gnall was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital - Lehighton.

Franklin Township Fire Department provided traffic control as the left lane of travel was closed for 45 minutes.
