A 16-year-old boy was hit by a car and seriously injured in Tamaqua while walking in November.
Kayla Hayes, 22, of Philadelphia, was driving with a suspended license, police say when she struck Eric Richardson. He was flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest, Allentown.
The hit-and-run occurred on East Broad Street. The Schuylkill County Communications Center received a call at 1:50 p.m. Nov. 20 for a pedestrian struck at East Broad and Laurel streets.
Hayes got out of the car then got back in. It was found abandoned around the block from the incident. Hayes fled to Philadelphia. She was identified as the driver by witnesses.
Earlier this month, she turned herself in. Bail was set at 10% of $10,000, which someone posted on her behalf.
A preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. Feb. 15 in Magisterial District Judge Stephen Bayer‘s office, Tamaqua.
Hayes is charged with accidents involving death or personal injury, accidents involving death or injury while not licensed, both third-degree felonies, and summary offenses of failure to stop and give information or render aid, failure to notify police of accident involving injury or death, driving without a license, fail to notify change in address, driving while operating privileges suspended or revoked, operating a vehicle without required financial responsibility and driving an unregistered vehicle, documents show.
Marian Catholic High School, where Richardson is a student, and St. Jerome Regional School, where a relative attends, held fundraisers in his honor.
