Bishop Schlert tests positive for COVID, has mild symptoms

Bishop Alfred Schlert is quarantining at home after testing positive for the Coronavirus.

Schlert has mild symptoms, according to an article posted Monday in the diocese newsletter.

He will continue to conduct diocesan business remotely during his recovery period.

In a letter to diocesan staff, Schlert said, “Over the past 20 months, we have known so many, perhaps including ourselves, who have contracted the Coronavirus. I wish to inform you that I am now among that number.”

The bishop said he was exposed to the virus last week at a confirmation.

After learning of the exposure, he immediately self-isolated. A coronavirus test on Friday was negative. He was tested again on Sunday, and that result was positive.

He is fully vaccinated and had a booster shot scheduled.

“My symptoms are mild at the present time. I am in touch with my doctor, and I have been quarantining,” he said.

He is has taken steps to notify anyone with whom he may have come in contact.

“During this time of isolation, I would like to reassure you that all of you will be in my prayers as you continue with the important work of our Diocese, of our parishes, and of our schools, and other ministries,” Schlert said.

“I am in good spirits, and I trust in God for a full recovery. I humbly ask for your prayers in the coming days.”
