Security cameras to be installed in Weissport

Weissport Council on Monday voted to approve the cost of $1,881.50 for three additional security cameras. The cost includes labor, wiring and brackets.

One camera is for the playground and two are for the municipal building. Councilman Thomas Ketchledge said, “We’ve been having problems with people dumping garbage in the municipal trash cans, and someone dumped a TV in the trash in the park.”

New zoning firm

Tim Dow and Tyler Galloway from Barry Isett & Associates attended the council meeting to introduce themselves. Barry Isett & Associates is the firm hired by the borough to handle the borough’s zoning issues.

“We’re going to be coming in and taking care of code enforcement, zoning, flood plain, and all Pa. UCC construction,” Dow said.

Galloway takes care of the office in Lehighton and will be the main contact for Isett.

Ketchledge provided a list of several properties that were top priority for the borough, several that were possibly in violation of zoning ordinance and code.

Dow said they would begin right away looking those properties. Barry Isett & Associates will be working on an as-needed basis for $75 per hour.

Yard sale

The new Weissport Event Committee will hold a community yard sale on Sept. 25 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the borough park. The rental is $10 for a 10-by-10-foot space. Contact Jess Cobb at 201-214-9086 to reserve spaces. Proceeds will be used by the event committee for projects such as the Halloween Parade and the Christmas Parade.

Movie night

Hope Community will hold another movie night in the Weissport Borough Park on Sept. 10 beginning at around 7:30 p.m. They will be showing “The Peanuts Movie” from 2015. Popcorn, hot dogs and other foods are all free. Those attending should bring along lawn chairs. Rain date will be Sept. 11.

Tree cutting

Ketchledge thanked all who helped in cutting down the dead trees in the borough park, and proposed that the borough rent the lift again for the weekend of Sept.17-19 to continue the project. The borough is also looking at someone doing some chain saw art with the remaining tree trunks of two of the trees at the ends of the park.

Anyone wanting the free firewood is welcome to pick it up at the park. Council reminds everyone not to use chain saws in the park. They can just load the wood and take it away.

Police report

Police Chief Matthew Williams provided his monthly statistical report from the Weissport Borough Police Department from July 19 to Aug. 16.

Williams said curfew violations top the list.

“I had a couple curfew violations; I’m seeing more of it,” he said, “11 p.m. is the curfew. Also had kids being rough with the equipment. They were verbally told and letters sent.”

He responded to four curfew violation calls, three traffic violations, two calls each for possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and quality of life issues; and one call each for overdose, mental health, criminal mischief, abandoned vehicle, towed vehicle, noise complains and a neighbor dispute; one court attendance; and administrative work.

Williams also advised the borough that the air card and mobile hot spot that he would need for the police car would be $40 a month from AT&T, and the docking station for the laptop computer would be $100 or less. The borough already owns the laptop.

The equipment is needed to run tags in the police car on the spot. At present, he needs to go to his office to do that or contact the county each time. Council approved the acquisition of the air card and docking station.

Open positions

Council will be looking to hire someone to work for the borough cutting grass and weeds, leaf clearing in the park and other work.

Borough President Arland Moyer advised the council members that after spending 2½ weeks cutting grass along the levee and spending six hours in the emergency room for dehydration, he would no longer do that kind of work for the borough.

“We need to get some help here, either hire someone to work for the borough or hire an outside firm to take care of the levee.”
