May 26, 1989 - A big day at the plate by Joe Gillespie helps Marian cruise to a 17-6 victory over Saucon Valley in the quarterfinal round of the District 11 Class 2A baseball playoffs. Gillespie collects five hits - all of them for extra bases - and knocks in six runs to lead the Colts. Gillespie, who scores four times, finishes with a two-run homer, a triple and three doubles. The winners, coached by Charlie “Chink” Connely, also receive four hits and four runs scored from Len Mace. Marian, which builds an 8-0 lead after two frames, ends the contest with 16 hits. Jeff Markosky earns the win, striking out 10 batters.
