Internet radio station opens in Palmerton

The expansion of a community-minded Internet radio station has come to fruition in downtown Palmerton.

The free internet Colossal Radio broadcast Monday from its new home at Off The Charts Music School LLC.

And plenty of people noticed, as evidenced by all the passers-by who took time to stop and watch.

That attention didn’t go unnoticed by owner Layne “Doc” Roberts, who said he welcomed the positive vibes.

“The response today has been overwhelming,” Roberts said. “People have been stopping out.”

Flanked by his cousin, Dustin Rehrig, who owns the music school at 306 Delaware Ave., Roberts felt the love.

“It’s just incredible,” Rehrig said of all the buzz the radio station generated from the mass of onlookers.

Terry Deibert and Kevin Kresge, Two of a Kind acoustic, helped usher in the radio station’s grand opening.

“We do anything to support music,” Deibert said. “Especially with the kids; they need an outlet, a purpose other than the computer.”

Roberts, who has been a DJ for over 30 years, launched the radio show in March 2019.

Having spent nearly two years at 195 S. First St., Lehighton, Roberts said the radio station’s intent is to pick up right where it left off by continuing to promote small local businesses.

“We’re still doing the same business spotlights,” he said. “Now, we can do more with the music scene.”

The radio station’s main footprint is throughout Carbon County, as well as into the Poconos and into the Lehigh Valley.

Roberts thanked Rehrig and all those who played a role in the expansion.

“We brought on everybody that was part of this team,” he said. “Without a team effort, nothing gets done.”

He’s proud of his brand-new, state-of-the-art facility, and has invited the public to tour it.

“It’s pretty cool,” he said. “My new digs are just fantastic.”

Roberts’ show runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Other shows include The Al Burke Classic Rock Show 1-5 p.m. Monday through Friday; The Beach Bar Piano Show Live from Florida, hosted by Dave Freeman at 7 p.m. Wednesday and noon on Sunday; Chuck Matthews Greatest Hits USA from 7-10 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to noon Sunday; and Keith Hines and Jason Roeder and their guests for the Lehighton Magazine Podcast at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Monday of the month.
