Lehighton Downtown Winter Farmers Market flourished despite weather

No matter the weather, a local farmers market continues to thrive.

The Lehighton Downtown Initiative Winter Farmers Market will carry on from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Lehighton Recreation Center, 243 S. Eighth St.

Underway since November, the farmers market has been held the second and fourth Saturdays of the month, according to Bambi Elsasser, treasurer of the LDI.

“It has been fantastic; we’ve had about on average maybe 10 vendors,” Elsasser said. “Before the holidays, we were really moving; back then we were probably at about 20.”

Not too bad for an event held during the winter, acknowledged Elsasser.

“We were very, very surprised at the reception we were getting,” she said. “So our market is definitely growing.”

Elsasser said among the regular vendors are two bakers, Sweet Justice and Warm Sugar; Patriot Farms (produce farmer); Bad Farms (beef and dairy products); Liberty Acres (Free range chicken, pork and eggs); Carpe Noctem Mushrooms (fresh mushrooms); Schocharie Ridge Apiary (honey), along with some crafters and occasionally a food truck.

“We kind of wing the winter market depending on the weather,” she said. “It’s always going to be there unless it’s really bad.”

Elsasser said she believes it benefits everyone to host the event whenever possible this time of year.

“The farmers, it’s their living,” she said. “The way I look at it is if they can be out working in the bad weather, the least we can do is buy fresh products from them.”

Elsasser said the winter farmers market runs through the second weekend in May.

She said the summer farmers market then starts up the third weekend in May in the borough’s Lower Park.
