Schuylkill buys flags to honor veterans

Deceased veterans in Schuylkill County will be honored with flags for Memorial Day.

Schuylkill County Commissioners voted to buy 39,600 flags from Metro Flags, New Jersey, at their Wednesday meeting. The approximately 8-by-12-inch flags will be available to organizations to place on graves.

“We have a lot of cemeteries,” said Brenda Zechman, director of Schuylkill County Veterans Affairs, adding she didn’t recall how many.

The county is in co-op agreement with Luzerne and Lackawanna counties for purchasing. The cost is $23,166. Zechman said 600 of the flags are kept for when veterans die each year. The flags will arrive the week of April 11. Distribution is at the Schuylkill County Courthouse for organizations who volunteer.

Zechman sends a letter to the approximately 52 organizations asking if they want to help and how many flags they need. Boy Scouts, Juvenile and Adult probation are among those who help, she said.
