Schuylkill commissioners approve $200 expense pay for tax collectors

Tax collectors in Schuylkill County are now eligible to collect $200 a year for expenses after commissioners voted last week.

“We know the great job that the tax collectors do,” Commissioner George Halcovage Jr. said.

Treasurer Linda Marchalk said the money is in recognition for “the great work that they do for the county tax revenue.”

Commissioners also voted to add a 5% commission payable to the county when the county treasurer’s office collects municipal real estate and per capita taxes for municipalities, Marchalk said. For example, the county collects the taxes for Port Carbon borough because the tax collector resigned in December. She said most municipalities pay tax collectors 5%. Those requesting tax certification in municipalities where the county collects taxes, in this case Port Carbon and Mount Carbon, must also pay a $10 tax certification fee after commissioners approved it.

The county also took other action including approving a police vehicle purchase of $37,351.31 from Sands Ford of Pottsville. Offender supervision fee money will pay for the vehicle. The management information systems department will get new Cisco UCS servers and two wireless access points from Shadow Technologies after commissioners approved a three-year 0% lease with annual payments of $6,282.22, for a total cost of $18,846.65. Cost includes hardware, support and related subscriptions.

Twelve repository bids were approved. County Administrator Gary Bender and Finance Director Paul Buber were authorized to approve budget adjustments not to exceed $1,000.
