Fire marshal called to Ryan Township fire

A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause of a fire in Ryan Township Saturday morning.

“It’s still an active investigation,” a state police trooper at Frackville said of incident that fire marshal John Burns is in charge of.

Firefighters were called to the scene at 20 Sherwood Drive at 10:17 a.m. for the fire after a neighbor called it in. A tanker task force was dispatched because there are no fire hydrants in the area.

Matt Morgan, captain of the Ryan Township Fire Company, said the home is a total loss. A damage estimate was not provided. He said the resident was taken into custody.

“Three cruisers arrived within five minutes of me getting there,” he said.

Morgan said the fire started in a first floor bedroom area and spread throughout the wood frame house. He didn’t have a cause of the fire that took two hours to contain.

“The wind and hoarding conditions definitely played a role in the spreading,” he said.

He said the overall condition of the house made it difficult for firefighters to navigate inside.

“ The whole thing was just packed with stuff,” Morgan said of the home that didn’t have working smoke detectors.

Fire departments from Ryan, Rush, West Mahanoy and Delano townships responded along with the Mahanoy City Fire Department. No firefighters were injured fighting the fire, Morgan said.
