Lansford council member Leibensperger dies

Irma Leibensperger, a Lansford Borough Council member and longtime volunteer, died early Friday.

Her passing was announced by Lansford Alive.

Leibensperger was a dedicated volunteer for the Lansford Alive Events Committee. She co-organized numerous concerts for the Events Committee’s Music in the Park series. She also helped with many other events, including the ethnic festival, tree lighting ceremony and house decorating contest.

“Irma was an awesome person,” said Michele Bartek, Lansford mayor. “She backed everything that was for the community.”

Leibensperger was a proponent of revitalizing Kennedy Park, home of the town’s monument to the miners of the Panther Valley.

The gazebo and refurbished coal car were just some of the features that she helped bring to the park.

For many years, she and her husband, Robert Leibensperger, operated the Daily Catch restaurant in Lansford. He died in 2001.

In 2017, Leibensperger was elected to serve on borough council. She served on the police and economic development committees.

Borough council President Bruce Markovich said Leibensperger always wanted what was best for the community.

“She definitely had the best interest of Lansford in her heart,” Markovich said.

In a social media post, Lansford Alive said that she leaves a void in the organization that will be hard to fill.

The post continued: “Irma, we thank you for your many contributions to our community and you will be missed.”
