Nesquehoning historical society seeks support

It takes a community to successfully build and maintain a historical society.

A group of Nesquehoning residents have accomplished this.

The Nesquehoning Historical Society has the support of the community, was graciously given the former First Baptist Church to use as the society’s home and has preserved hundreds of pieces of the borough’s history over the last several years.

But it also takes money to maintain such an organization, and with the pandemic still forcing events to be canceled, the society is asking the community for a little help.

Last month, the society posted on its Facebook page that it is looking for donations to help cover the cost of some maintenance projects, including roof repairs, as well as other future projects in the works.

Joseph Roman, historian for the Nesquehoning Historical Society said that it is in times like this that the society and residents need to partner together to make sure the history of the borough is not lost.

“The society currently has many exciting projects in the works that many residents will be interested in,” Roman said. “However, the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed us down considerably as with many other organizations. It is, therefore, imperative that we be able to continue the vital work of our society so that many lifelong residents of Nesquehoning may know and appreciate the rich history of our town and the surrounding area.

“From the coal mines to the churches to the old shops and hangouts, the history of our little town deserves to be preserved.”

For those who would like to help the historical society, checks made payable to the Nesquehoning Historical Society can be sent to 157 W. Railroad St., Nesquehoning, PA 18240 or through Facebook page on the society’s Facebook page “Nesquehoning Historical Society.”
