A bridge dating back to 1920 in Porter Township, Schuylkill County, will be replaced.
Commissioners voted to enter into an agreement with JVI Group, York Springs, for Bridge 67 on Mount Eagle Road. The company submitted the lowest bid at $425,568.
County Engineer Lisa Mahall said the two lane steel beam bridge, which measures 30 feet long by 22.8 feet wide, is structurally deficient.
“The steel is deteriorating,” she said.
It has a posted weight limit of 21 tons and a combination of 31 ton limit.
A concrete prefabricated arch bridge will be built in its place. Work on the two lane bridge could start shortly, Mahall said.
“We do expect it to be open by the end of the year,” weather depending, she said.
In other business recently, the Schuylkill County Commissioners approved a resolution to submit an application for $326,950 to the state Department of Community and Economic Development Community Development Block Grant Program.
County Administrator Gary Bender said the money would be for COVID-19 related reasons. He said if approved, the goal is to provide the money to the Schuylkill Chamber of Commerce to assist small businesses. Approval could come in about four weeks, Bender said.
