Nesquehoning Borough Council

Nesquehoning Borough Council discussed or acted on the following items during its monthly meeting last week.

• Approved a memorandum of understanding for the police detective position once paperwork is signed by the borough police department and Fraternal Order of Police.

Council named officer Richard Neikam as the police detective for the three-month trial period conditional upon all signatures.

• Noted Jim Thorpe Police Department requested fire police from Nesquehoning for the weekends in October. If either of the borough’s two fire police are interested, they can work out details with Jim Thorpe.

• Approved starting the process of naming two roads off Market Street (Route 209) in the area of the Wash Shanty hill. The two new sections would be named Little Italy Road and Mount Pisgah Road.

• Discussions will be taking place about trick or treat on Halloween due to the pandemic. Mayor Sam Kitchko said he heard that the borough’s trunk or treat is going to be canceled, but no official announcement has been made. He also said to council that a decision on trick or treat needs to be made.

• Approved attorney Matthew G. Schnell of Strubinger Law as the zoning solicitor at $95 per hour.

• Approved John McArdle’s request to buy one portable radio with docking station for the fire company that is compatible with Schuylkill County communications. The fire companies, right now, cannot communicate with each other due to different radio signals. The purchase cannot exceed $5,000.

• Approved renewing Emery Toth’s consultation agreement with the sewer department at a continued cost of $250 a month retainer and $50 per hour when called in.

• Rejected bids for the Johnson Park project due to council having too many questions with the scope of work in the bid. Council will look at the project again and rebid when further decisions are made.
