Planners review portion of hospital project
Carbon County Planning Commission reviewed two plans, including one for a portion of the Lehigh Valley Hospital project in Mahoning Township.
On Tuesday, the commission recommended preliminary plan approval for a minor subdivision and lot line revision between the Oscar E. Beck Family Trust and Mahoning Township Municipal Authority on lands at the intersection of East Blakeslee Boulevard and Troxell Road.
The plans call for cutting out a 0.08-acre section from the Beck Family Trust and combining it with two small parcels owned by Mahoning Township Municipal Authority to create a 0.30-acre lot.
Ivan O. Meixell, county planner, in his review, pointed out that the parcel would be used for the sewage pump station for the Lehigh Valley Hospital once construction begins. The recommendation will now be sent to Mahoning Township.
LVHN is proposing to construct a two-story, 85,000-square-foot hospital, a two-story medical building, 345 parking spaces and heliport at the East Blakeslee Boulevard location.
In March, the planning commission also gave conditional plan approval for one action regarding another subdivision off of the Oscar E. Beck Family Trust land. That action with LVHN subdivided 34.57 acres into two lots at the north side of East Blakeslee Boulevard near the intersection of Troxell Road.
Also in March, a letter from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission that was sent in December noted that the 35-acre piece of land must have a Phase 1 archaeological study completed because “there is high probability that National Register significant archaeological sites are present within this project area,” which could be “adversely affected by project activities.”
In other matters, the planning commission also recommended conditional plan approval for a lot consolidation plan by Thomas G. and Nadine A. Schmidt.
The plan, located at 569 Columbia Ave., Palmerton, calls for combining two lots to create a 0.4408-acre lot.
