Carbon finalizes voting results; Rep. Heffley also wins Democratic nomination

The Carbon County Elections Office on Wednesday released the final vote totals of the June 2 primary election, having counted all absentee and mail-in ballots that were used this year by the electorate.

The totals show state Rep. Doyle Heffley, a Republican from Lower Towamensing Township, has been assured election to his sixth two-year term of office, having successfully won the Democratic nomination via the write-in vote method.

Heffley, who was first elected to the office in the 2010 election, was unopposed in seeking re-election, and there were no Democratic candidates who filed for the nomination opposite him. But Kara Scott of Bowmanstown, who ran unsuccessfully against Heffley in 2018, conducted a write-in vote, attempting to get on the ballot for the November general election.

Heffley also sought the Democratic nomination via that process and defeated Scott by a vote of 416 to 322, virtually guaranteeing himself re-election for the fifth time since he will appear on both ballots in November.

Two years ago, Heffley defeated Scott by a tally of 14,033 to 6,853. The district includes all of Carbon County, except Summit Hill Borough, which was removed from the 122nd Legislative District when the GOP-led Legislature redesigned the boundaries of the House seats.

Meanwhile, Carbon County voters participated in balloting for national, statewide and regional positions, the results of which were finalized by the elections office after having to scan thousands of absentee and mail-in ballots.

While Heffley will be unopposed in the general election, two races will take place where Carbon County will be a part of overall districts. In the state 124th District, Republican incumbent Jerry Knowles of Hometown will be challenged by Democrat Taylor Picone of Hamburg. In addition to Summit Hill, the district includes parts of Berks and Schuylkill counties, including Coaldale, McAdoo, New Ringgold, Orwigsburg and Tamaqua boroughs and East Brunswick Township, Kline, Rush, Schuylkill, Walker, West Brunswick and West Penn townships.

In the 9th Congressional District, Republican incumbent Dan Meuser will face Democrat Gary Wegman, who despite not winning in Carbon County won the overall race over Laura Quick. The district includes all of Carbon, Columbia, Lebanon, Montour and Schuylkill counties and parts of Berks, Luzerne and Northumberland counties.

Of course, county residents will participate in the race for president and three state row offices, attorney general, auditor general and treasurer.
