Family displaced when blaze destroys home in Eldred

Two adults and a child were displaced Thursday after a fire destroyed their Eldred Township home.

The family of three was not home when a neighbor saw smoke and possible flames coming from the roof of the modular-style home at 108 Butternut St., inside Weir Mountain Estates.

The neighbor called 9-1-1. Crews were dispatched at 11:52 a.m.

When Kunkletown firefighters arrived on scene “they saw a fully engulfed house fire,” Kunkletown Fire Chief Brian Stankovich said Thursday evening.

Stankovich was not there but received the full report from his assistant chief Ray Miller.

Polk Township, Blue Ridge Hook & Ladder and West End fire companies, as well as West End Ambulance were dispatched to the scene. No firefighters were injured.

“The four fire companies did a quick knock down and had the fire under control within 45 minutes,” said Stankovich.

The house is a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Crews set up a fill site on Fiddletown Road.

“We had enough tankers. We had no issues with water supply,” Stankovich said.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with necessities such as clothing, hygiene items and temporary housing.

One of the residents was on the way home from work while firefighters battled the blaze, Stankovich said.
