Pleasant Valley Elementary students demonstrate digital learning

Pleasant Valley Elementary School Co-Principal Roger Pomposello and about 30 elementary students visited the district school board meeting last week to introduce the board to “A Blizzard of Technology at PVE.”

The elementary school houses grades kindergarten through third grade, and with help from Educational Foundation Grants the students are being introduced to some of the newest learning trends.

“We are looking to blend the old with the new,” Pomposello said. “We have kindergartners who have iPads at home and know how to use them. We are using the old and the new.”

The kids took about 15 minutes of the meeting time to show off what they were learning and what they were learning with.

One of the items that the students use is an “interactive panel.” The panel is a digital board that looks similar to a large tablet and uses touch-screen technology.

The panel was being demonstrated by a group of third-graders. One of the math programs reinforced multiplication learning by having the students park a numbered car in a slot that contained the correct equation.

Pomposello said that since the school currently only has one interactive panel, students get to use it once every six-day cycle.

PVE also has 60 iPads that students are able to use. One of the ways that the iPads are used is a series of apps known as OSMOS. Students were using an OSMOS app to write code during the demonstration.

Abigail Smith, Emma Kish and Jacob Altman, all third-graders at Pleasant Valley Elementary, demonstrated how to practice multiplication tables using the Interactive Panel. About 30 students from the elementary demonstrated an interactive panel for the school board. JUDY DOLGOS-KRAMER/TIMES NEWS
