Driver is cited after New Castle crash

Three Pottsville residents fled the scene of a one-vehicle crash at 2:30 a.m. Dec. 10 along New Castle Township Route 4003 (East Darkwater Road), after which time they were located and the driver was cited.

Police said Joseph C. Generella, 38, was driving the 2005 Ford Explorer west at a speed too great for conditions of snow- and ice-covered highway. He lost control of the vehicle while descending a downward slope on the road and the vehicle slid off the road for about 30 feet before coming to rest.

Police said Generella and two passengers, Scott Schoffstall, 25, and Alexis Fritz, 26, got out of the vehicle and fled on foot through the woods.

Police said they walked to 23 Greenbury Road and failed to notify police of the crash.

Police said Generella was charged with failure to drive at a safe speed, driving a vehicle while his license is suspended, leaving the scene of an accident and failure to provide immediate notice of an accident to police.
