Charges dismissed for father accused of shooting daughter’s boyfriend

A Schuylkill County district judge dismissed all charges that had been filed against a man who shot his daughter’s boyfriend in the groin on Oct. 15 at a county motel.

District Judge Christina E. Hale of Frackville dropped the charges against Donald Jenkins Jr., 40, of Shenandoah, after the victim didn’t show up at Jenkins’ preliminary hearing Monday.

Jenkins, who was immediately released from his confinement under $250,000 cash bail, had been charged by state police at Frackville with attempted homicide, burglary, aggravated and simple assault, possessing instruments of crime and recklessly endangering another person.

An affidavit of probable cause filed by Trooper Joseph W. Hall of the Frackville barracks states the shooting happened at about 2:45 p.m. that day room 49 of the Motel 6 on Altamonte Boulevard in West Mahanoy Township.

The victim, Emmanuel Cancel, 29, told Hall he and his girlfriend, 20-year-old Jasmine M. Jenkins, had been in the room he had rented for the weekend with when Jenkins burst in.

He and Jenkins argued, and Jenkins pulled out a handgun and shot Cancel in the groin.

Cancel was treated at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.

Jasmine Jenkins told Hall her father was upset that she was dating Cancel.

After the shooting, she said, she and her father left in his car.
