Franklin students surpass their goal

Franklin Elementary students don't just break records, they shatter them.

At least when it comes to reading, as their Work Hard, Read Hard Program clearly illustrates. The goal of the students as a school was to read 2,017 books. It turns out the students had read over 3,100 books, an astounding figure by all accounts. For their superior efforts, the students celebrated their accomplishments for reaching their goal on Friday.Suzie Cordes, reading specialist, said the school participated in a Day of Celebrating Books and Writing by having different writers and authors appear at the school to speak to the kids.Speakers included Gordon Ripkey and Lamont Ebbert, both retired district administrators, who spoke of their book, "Images of America, Lehighton," business writer Matt Cordes, and Patrick Matsinko, Times News sports writer. The students broke up into stations where they interviewed each other for the schoolwide biography, "Who is Franklin Elementary," which will eventually be published and distributed to every classroom. In addition, the school's PTO celebrated by providing ice cream to the students.Second-grader Matthew Beam said the activities were exciting."I learned and enjoyed myself," Beam said. "I got to learn more about animals."Cordes said the program was in honor of Read Across America week in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday.
