Candlebox at the Sherman

Even though Candlebox hails from Seattle, the birthplace of 1990s-era grunge rock, don't expect flannel-wrapped angst during the 2017 acoustic tour.

On March 10, the five-man band will bring its stripped-down show to the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, giving fans a chance to hear the anecdotes behind the six-album career of the grunge- and rock-based band."All the dates for the February through April months are more storytellers. I'll be talking about the history of the songs and about writing them," said founder and frontman Kevin Martin."These stories can be funny at times," he said."I consider myself the funniest person I know," he said tongue-in-cheek.Martin and his 1981 Martin HD guitar will be joined on stage by bassist Adam Kury, drummer Dave Krusen, lead guitarist Mike Leslie and rhythm guitarist Brian Quinn for the early spring performances."It's been a real treat," said Martin."If you would've asked me a few years ago to do this, I would've said no way, but now it's the only way I want to do it."Candlebox first took over the radio waves in 1993 with the release of its first self-titled album and single "Far Behind" that some consider a summer anthem of heartfelt longing and relatable regret."'You,' was really interesting to write. It's an intricate song on the record and has taken on a really classic 1960s vibe of folk rock 'n' roll in the acoustic show," Martin said.Martin's recognizable voice alternated between gruff harmonies and deep emotion throughout the "Candlebox" album and has continued that trend over the past 25 years into the most recent "Disappearing in Airports" album released last April."Scott (Mercado) and I started the band but we have always switched out musicians. It's been about the whole of the band not the sum of its parts. It's always been about the music, and I think that's what fans appreciate," he said.Martin said even with the lineup changes and record label issues over its two-decade run, Candlebox retains its sound in part because of its signature 6/8 time stamp, Martin's voice and his writing style."I do most of the writing on a Gibson acoustic and then Brian handles all the fancy noodling," he said."It blows my mind that I'm still doing this."Ticket holders will hear familiar songs in a fresh way said Martin."We go heavy on the first album because that's what people recognize most, but we will spotlight a few off the new record too," he said."They all have something special and I play them different every single night. With the acoustic sets you have to make sure the delivery of the songs are right on because you can't hide," he said of the upcoming shows.Martin says the audience will see professional musicians who "really love what they do."The Sherman Theater Acoustic show will feature local performer Melissa Krahnke, better known as Lissa from 98.5 KRZ, and Jackson Vee as the night's opener.Doors open at 7 p.m.Tickets for the concert can be purchased online at
