Parents get a taste of school life, support PTO

“What did you do at school today?”

Every parent asks it at some point. But parents at Panther Valley Intermediate School got an opportunity to see for themselves, by joining their kids for breakfast this week.“Bring Someone You Love to Breakfast” brought out 47 fifth-grade parents on Wednesday to share breakfast with their kids and support the school’s PTO.“We wanted to invite the parents along to share in the day,” said Jeanine Snyder, president of the intermediate school’s PTO.Fourth- and sixth-grade students will host their parents next week, after the snowstorm scuttled their plans for breakfast.Parents paid $5 for the privilege. The Nutrition Group, the school’s food service provider, supplied the bagels, parfaits and coffee cake for the parents.“Last year we sponsored a lunch,” Snyder said. “It’s something to show the parents what they do in their normal school day.”Many of the parents didn’t even have school breakfast when they were kids.“I don’t think it was offered. My mom made me oatmeal every day,” said Sharon Newton, who dined with her daughter Molly.Kids ate free, as they do every day at Panther Valley for breakfast and lunch. The district meets the USDA’s standards for universal free lunch.Laurie Mount, who oversees the kitchen at PVI for the Nutrition Group, said that breakfast helps students concentrate. The event also raised more than $200 for the PTO, which sponsors programs and trips for students.“They do a lot for the kids,” said Tracy Weaver, who was eating with her son Chase.Snyder said that the PTO’s long-term goal is helping to fund the purchase of new computers, like the Panther Valley Elementary PTO did for their students this year.
