Palmerton team shares meal with veterans

Members of the Palmerton football team won't soon forget this weekend, when they participated in the District XI championship game. But they'll also remember another "humbling" experience this weekend, sharing it with local veterans.

About a dozen veterans from American Legion Post 269 in Palmerton joined the team at their traditional team dinner Friday night. They were invited by the team."It's incredible the support we get as veterans, with our memorial, our flagpole and the wall. You can't ask much more from the people of Palmerton," said Ed Moyer, commander of Legion Post 269.It was quite the Veterans Day treat for Moyer's fellow Legion members, who are big fans of the Bombers, especially this year. The two groups formed a closer bond this summer during the weeklong visit from the moving Vietnam Memorial Wall.A group of football players helped set up The Moving Wall display when it came to Palmerton. Then they helped take down the many panels of the wall and prepare them to be transported to its next appearance. Thanks in part to the team's hard work, 15,000 people visited Palmerton during the week that the wall was on display."They did all of our manual labor work, and we really respect them for that, and thank them for that," Moyer said. "If us old-timers had to do it, we'd probably still be down there."Senior co-captain Garrett Perschy said it was the least they could do to honor veterans, especially those whose names are listed on the Vietnam wall."It was like, anything we could do for them, because they gave everything for us. That was just a little something we could do to give back to them in the community," Perschy said. The players also participated in a Veterans Day program at the school earlier that day. Even as they prepared for a huge game, they were thinking of the veterans."We had an assembly where six or seven veterans came in and they told us their personal stories," Perschy said. "It was a very humbling experience, for sure."
