Nesquehoning hears update on trash issues

Nesquehoning officials met with the president of the company hired to haul the borough's trash to resolve a few issues that had been happening in the past few months.

During council's workshop meeting on Wednesday, Larry Wittig, president of Tamaqua Transfer and Recycling, met with the board members to update officials on changes that have been made since the complaints were received.About two months ago, council spoke about a number of complaints from residents over their trash cans not being placed back on the curb after the garbage is collected, which is one of the stipulations of the contract. Instead, cans were being thrown, and one resident sent council a photo after one collection.Wittig said that he has met with the drivers and pickers to discuss the problems and re-emphasize that the driver is the boss on the truck and needs to be aware of what's going on and stop things that are being done incorrectly. He said that to resolve the issue, he has made personnel changes to the crew serving Nesquehoning.Council members Frank Jacobs and Mary Fox both said that in the past few weeks, the pickups have gotten a lot better, which Wittig said was a result of the crew changes.Jacobs thanked Wittig for coming to speak with council regarding this matter.Nesquehoning formerly operated its own sanitation department but decided to outsource it after costs continued to rise.In October 2014, Tamaqua Transfer took over the operations under a $1.4 million five-year contract. In other matters, Nesquehoning council is looking at offering residents the option to pay sanitation and sewer bills online either by credit card or online bill pay.The cost to the borough for setting up the service is $750 with an additional $15 per month for processing and 13 cents per check processed.Councilwoman Rosemary Porembo said that the online system would help the borough and provide residents with an easier way to make payments since automatic withdrawals from a bank account could be set up.
