Schuylkill finishes converting school into offices

The reworking of a former Pottsville beauty school into offices housing the Schuylkill County Children and Youth Services agency is now complete.

Commissioners approved payment of the last invoice for the work.County Finance Director Paul Buber said in response to a question from Commissioner Gary J. Hess that the project came in at $3.1 million.An additional $400,000 for furniture and other contents of the building that were paid for by Children and Youth will be reimbursed to the agency by the state, he said.County grant writer Gary Bender said a $500,000 government grant for the project will be distributed to the county in four or five increments.The project moved the agency's offices from their cramped quarters at 410 N. Centre St., next to the U.S. Post Office, across the street from 324 N. Centre St.The new offices are housed in the former Empire Beauty School.The county acquired the building from brothers Dale F. Schoeneman and Franklin K. Schoeneman through eminent domain for $740,000 in 2012.Renovations began last April.Also on Wednesday, commissioners agreed to seek bids for repairs to county bridge 39 in Walker Township, 81 in Girardville borough, and 141 in Hubley Township.The bids will be accepted in the county controller's office until 3 p.m. June 20, with bid openings at the June 22 commissioners' meeting.Commissioners expect to award the jobs on July 6.In other matters, they approved an adjustment to the local transportation organization resolution certifying the local match for state operating financial assistance, approved at the April 6 public meeting.The original estimated operating financial assistance was adjusted to $1,553,575 for this fiscal year.
