Dr. Seuss Day celebrations held throughout the area

In an effort to promote literacy as part of the St. Luke's Miners/Panther Valley School District's Adopt a School program, the school district will be celebrating Dr. Seuss Day/Read Across America with schools in the school district.

The link between literacy and health is strong, and teachers can all make the community healthier by getting involved.The book schools will read is "Green Eggs and Ham."Local volunteers, including administration, staff and physicians from St. Luke's; and students, faculty and staff from the Panther Valley School District; as well as volunteers from community organizations, will read to a classroom of children and then donate the book to the classroom.Bookmarks with the Reader's Oath, which was developed by the National Education Association and Dr. Seuss activity sheets, will be distributed to students who participate in this event.The school kicked off the celebration Friday at Panther Valley Elementary, where St. Luke's Miners President Bill Moyer and Lehigh Carbon Community College's Maureen Donovan joined the Panther Valley JROTC in reading to the elementary school students.West Penn Elementary School in New Ringgold also held a celebration Friday afternoon.Upcoming events throughout the area include:• Our Lady of the Angels, Lansford, 9:45 a.m. Monday.• Head Start, Coaldale, 10 a.m. Monday, with Kristin Black, Panther Valley School District athletic director.• St. Joseph's Regional Academy, Jim Thorpe, 1 p.m. Monday, with Dr. Sully and Dr. McKinley.• St. Jerome's Regional School, Tamaqua, 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, with Dr. Calabrese.• Panther Valley Intermediate Building, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday with volunteers from the Panther Valley organization Aevidum.• Tamaqua Elementary School, 1 p.m. Wednesday.• LB Morris Elementary School, Jim Thorpe, 1 p.m. Thursday.
