Four defendants in criminal cases who were scheduled to go on trial Monday in Carbon County court instead entered into plea bargains with the district attorney's office and pleaded guilty to charges.

Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted the pleas.Two casesKayla Marie Leibowitz, 26, of Lansford, entered pleas in two pending cases. She pleaded to one count of driving under the influence for an incident on Feb. 24 along Bertsch Street in Lansford. State police at Lehighton filed the charges and indicated a test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.She also pleaded to one count each of false identification to law enforcement and possession of drug paraphernalia for an incident on April 14 along Berwick Street in Beaver Meadows following a traffic stop. At the stop she gave her name as Deanna Leibowitz, who is her sister. She said she gave the false ID because her driver's license was under suspension.Matika deferred sentencing so Leibowitz could obtain a drug and alcohol evaluation.Gun purchaseBrian James Kaelin, 44, of Mahanoy City, pleaded to one count of persistent disorderly conduct. He was arrested by Franklin Township police for an incident on Aug. 27, 2014, when he attempted to purchase a firearm at a township business. In filling out the required federal application he gave false answers to two questions. In a creative agreement between the DA's office and the defendant, the conduct charge was added to the original complaint. He was originally charged him with materially false written statement concerning the purchase of a firearm.Matika placed him on probation for six months and ordered he render 25 hours of community service.Drug chargesTwo defendants entered guilty pleas in drug-related cases.John Yurasits, 28, of Lehighton, and formerly of Lansford, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested by Lansford police on May 29 in the area of 334 E. Bertsch St. after officers responded to a report of a unwanted person.Yurasits is currently an inmate in the county prison on the charge, unable to post bail. He also told Matika he had arranged to enter a inpatient rehabilitation facility when released on parole.Matika sentenced him to time-served (44 days) to one year in jail and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use, and render 50 hours of community service.Michael John Kabana, 25, of Lansford, and formerly of Coaldale, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was arrested on April 30 in the parking lot of the Rite Aid store along N. First Street, by Lehighton police. Officers responded to the pharmacy to report of drug activity. While making a purchase in the store a needle dropped out of Kabana's pocket in view of pharmacy personnel who called police.Kabana said he recently completed a five month prison term in Schuylkill County and is currently on parole.Matika placed him on probation for a year concurrent with his Schuylkill term, and ordered he render 50 hours of community service and zero tolerance imposed on drug and alcohol use.Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000, and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
