Carbon County will again help eligible senior citizens purchase their fruits and vegetables next year.

On Thursday, the board voted 2-0 to approve an agreement between the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging to participate in the 2016 Senior Farmers Market Nutrition program. Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein was in Harrisburg.A total of $1,500 is allocated the 2016 program for Carbon County senior citizens who meet the guidelines.The program gives eligible seniors $20 in vouchers to encourage them to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables from local growers who make their produce available at farmers markets.In 2015, the eligibility requirements were that seniors must be a Carbon County resident age 60 or older by Dec. 31 with a total gross annual income at or below $21,775 for a one-person household and $29,471 for a two-person household. A couple is entitled to $20 each. Income guidelines for 2016 have not yet been announced.The distribution of these vouchers takes place in June through the Area Agency on Aging office and county senior centers.
