Schuylkill County election preview
Although there are plenty to choose from at the county and state level, there are few local races next week for the Tuesday general election.
Most of the races for borough councils, township supervisors and school boards in the Times News coverage area were decided in the primary election.Following is a brief look at the local offices up for election.COALDALE: Coaldale council has a race for one of four seats up for election. Almost assured of a seat is Claire Remington, who has gained both the Republican and Democratic nominations in the primary.There are four seeking the remaining three seats. The lone Democrat is Yvonne Stoffey. The Republican hopefuls are Thomas D. Keerans, Michael J. Doerr and Vincent Miller Sr.There is also a two-year seat on council up for election. Remington has the GOP nod and is opposed by Francis J. Hutta on the Democratic side.Joel Johnson, the current mayor, has both nominations for a full four-year term. Mark Richards has both nods for constable, six-year term.SCHUYLKILL TOWNSHIP: Schuylkill Township has a race for a six-year term for supervisor. Incumbent Republican Christine Verdier is being opposed by Democrat Frank Fabrizio.Democrat Joe Yesavage is facing off against Republican John Zubris for a six-year term as constable. There are no names on the ballot for position of auditor, four and six-year terms.TAMAQUA: The Republicans will control council as usual. There are four seats up for election and four Republicans are the only names on the ballot. They include incumbents Brian Connely, Thomas Cara and R. Daniel Evans, along with Ronald Bowman. There is also a two-year term for council with Connely the only name listed. He will have to decide after the election which seat he wants to keep.Republican Charles T. Rodgers is unopposed for constable as is Republican Betsy Kline Melnick for auditor, six-year term.WEST PENN TOWNSHIP: Incumbent Republican Tony Prudenti has both nods for another six-year term as supervisor. Others on the ballot include GOP Jack Sarge for constable, six-year term, and no one for auditor, six-year term.WALKER TOWNSHIP: Incumbent Republican William R. McMullen is unopposed for another six-year term as supervisor and GOPer Leonard Ostergaard for a four-year term as supervisor. There is no candidate for six-year term constable.RUSH TOWNSHIP: Incumbent Republican Robert Leibensperger won a fight in the primary and is unopposed in the general election for another six-year term as supervisor. There are no candidates for constable and auditor, six-year terms, and auditor, four-year term.NEW RINGGOLD: There are three seats on borough council, four-year terms with only Republican Elizabeth B. Fry the lone candidate. The other positions will be filed by write-in votes, or appointment. There is no candidate for constable, six-year term.KLINE TOWNSHIP: In Kline Township incumbent Carmen Cara has both nominations for supervisor, six-year term. Other offices has Republican John J. La Rose Sr., constable six-year term, and GOPer Bruce Yourechko Jr., auditor, six-year term, both unopposed.MCADOO: In McAdoo there is a race for borough council. Four seats, four-year terms with each party having four candidates.The Democrats seeking the seats are John DeBalko, Marion DeBalko, Daniel A. Gallagher and Peter P. Minneci. On the GOP side the candidates are Edward J. Bielen Sr., William J. Slovik, Mary Labert and Daniel Borchick. There is no candidate for six-year term as constable.MAHANOY CITY: In this borough there is a race for four seats on council. Almost assured of winning are Francis P. Burke and Robyn L. Sincavage, as the two have both nominations. The race for the other two seats are between Democrats Thomas R. Flamini and John A. Pytko and Republicans Diane Rachuck and Douglas Litwhiler. For constable, six-year term, Democrat Larry Levy faces Republican Douglas Litwhiler.BLYTHE TOWNSHIP: There are two seats for supervisor, six-year term, with Democratic Adam J. Nothstein and Republican Cynthia Borchick the only candidates. Joseph J. Leskin Jr. is the Democratic candidate for constable, six-year term, and Keith Rokosky is the Democratic candidate for auditor, six-year term.MIDDLEPORT: There are two seats, four-year term, on council with Patricia Skripko getting both nods in the primary. Also on the ballot for the other seat is Democrat Carol A. Oswald and Republican Elzabeth A. Borger. There is no candidate for constable, six-year term.NEW PHILADELPHIA: There are three four-year term seats on council with three candidates on the ballot. Democrats Mary L. Shanoskie and Dennis A. Faust and Republican Debra A. Sullivan.Democrat John Bondura is unopposed for constable, six-year term.RYAN TOWNSHIP: Incumbent Clyde Champ Holman has both nominations for another term as supervisor, six-year term. Republicans are the only names for the other four offices. They include Thomas Bux, six-year term constable; Timothy McGowan, two-year auditor; Donna M. McGowan, four-year auditor; and Linda A. Fetter, six-year auditor.All offices up for election but do not have candidates listed on the ballot will be filled by either write-in votes or appointed at a later date.
