Council races exist in two Panther Valley communities

Two Panther Valley municipalities will see contested races for borough council positions when voters go to the polls on Tuesday to participate in the General Election of 2015.

The challenges exist in Lansford and Summit Hill, and there is also balloting to be determined in seats on the Panther Valley School District Board of Education.In Nesquehoning Borough, there are no contested races.Here is a look at what voters in the Panther Valley communities can expect to see on the voting machines when they report to vote:Lansford BoroughSeven people are running for four-year terms, and two people are seeking a two-year term on the Lansford Borough Council, where five seats will be determined.In the balloting for the four-year terms, Matthew S. Walsh appears on both ballots, having won Democratic and Republican nominations in the primary.With him on the Democratic side are Bernice L. Moser, Joseph Butrie and Jared Soto, while on the Republican side with Walsh are John M. Turcmanovich, Catherine E. O'Brien and Bruce Markovich.For the two-year term, the candidates are Democrat Rose Mary Cannon and Republican Roy E. Stenger.Democrat George T. Bottomley Jr., a Democrat, is running for the six-year term as constable that is also available and is unopposed.Summit Hill BoroughFive people are seeking four four-year terms on the Summit Hill Borough Council, including David A. Wargo, whose name appears on both the Democratic and Republican ballots as he won dual nominations in the primary.With Wargo on the Democratic side are Gregory Kosciolek, Michael Kokinda II and Karen L. Ruzicka, while David B. Hiles joins Wargo on the GOP ticket.Max Matyascik, a Democrat, is running for the six-year term as constable, which is the only other office to be decided. He is unopposed.Panther Valley School BoardThe voters in Summit Hill, Lansford and Nesquehoning in Carbon County will join the voters in Coaldale, Schuylkill County, in deciding five four-year terms on the Panther Valley School Board.There are six candidates, including four who won both Democratic and Republican nominations in the primary and will appear on both ballots as cross-filed candidates. They include Wayne V. Gryzik, Anthony DeMarco, Gary Porembo and Renee Demelfi.A runoff between Democrat Joseph Faenza and Republican Michelle Markovich is the apparent race for the fifth position on the board.Nesquehoning BoroughThere is an actual shortage of candidates in Nesquehoning, where only three people are running for four four-year terms on the borough council.Frank Jacobs is one of them and had the advantage over the other two since he won both Democratic and Republican nominations in the primary and will appear on both tickets. The other two candidates are both Democrats. They are Donato P. DeMarco and David Demelfi.Regina Kennedy, a Democrat, is running again for the six-year term as constable and is without opposition.
